Qawwalli singers known as Qawwals seem to sing forever. One of the most famous ones was Ustad Murli who was performing qawwalis in his 80s. From a rich musical tradition in Lucknow India, here is a picture of him whilst demonstrating the art of Takrar-repetiton of a musical and lyrical phrase, still showing the same passion and vigour of youth.

One of the masters of qawwalli music was Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (passed away in 1997). The Faisalabad born maestro treated audiences throughout the world with gymnastics of the tongue. I found a really 'cool' album cover today to share with all.

Qawwali is a popular form of devotional music from northern India and Pakistan. In the wake of the Muslim invasion of the sub-continent 1000 years ago Muslim saints, the Sufis, wanted to bring the teachings of Islam to the people of India.

The music that carried the message of Islam came to be known as Qawwalli. This music was performed at the shrines of Sufi Saints where the divinely inspired rhythms lifted the audience to mystic states.

Around many of these shrines, cities have sprung up where qawwalli now competes in popularity with the romantic songs of the film industry.
